BLDC solar water pumps

BLDC Solar Water Pumps
for Off-Grid Pumping

BLDC pumps driven by a dedicated solar pump controller — a simple solar pumping system for small and medium duties, off-grid sites and remote areas.

01 / The system

What Is a BLDC Solar Water Pump?

A pump built around a brushless DC motor, driven by a controller made for it, with the array as the supply. There is no AC side and no inverter: the controller is the whole drive.

  • The array is the supply. Where there is no grid to fall back on, the pump runs from what the sun gives during the day.
  • The controller is the drive. It sits between the array and the motor, tracks the array and feeds the pump from it.
  • The pump is a brushless DC pump. The motor is made for that supply rather than for an AC supply.
  • The three go together. The controller, the pump and the array are one system, which is why the pump is supplied with its controller rather than on its own.

This is the difference from the AC line, where a standard AC pump is driven by a solar pumping inverter. Both are solar pumping; they are not the same system.

02 / When to choose it

When to Choose BLDC

These are the reasons a site is read on the BLDC line rather than the AC line. None of them is a rating; they are the shape of the duty and the site.

  • Small and medium duties The line is read for small and medium pumping duties, where the pump serves a household, a smallholding or a village supply.
  • Off-grid sites There is no grid and no generator at the site, and the array is the supply the pump runs on.
  • A simple system Array, controller, pump. Fewer parts to bring to site and fewer parts to get wrong, which is what a simple off-grid pumping system asks for.
  • Installation that stays simple The pump and the controller are supplied as a set and wired to the array, so the installation is one arrangement rather than two systems that have to be reconciled.
  • Remote areas Sites far from a supply and far from service, where what is installed has to work from the array alone.
  • A DC motor built for the array A brushless DC motor is the efficient route for a small solar pumping duty, because the motor and the supply are made for each other.

03 / The other route

BLDC vs AC Solar Pumping

Not which one is better, but which one a site is read on. The two lines are different systems, and the comparison is there to place a duty on one of them.

The two routes side by side. A row that says a feature depends on the product means exactly that.
Dimension BLDC Solar Pump AC Pump + Solar Inverter
Typical Power Small / medium Small to high power
Motor BLDC AC motor
Drive BLDC Controller Solar Pumping Inverter
Existing AC Pump Conversion No Yes
Typical Use Small off-grid systems Distribution / irrigation / project systems
Hybrid Grid Support Depends on product Available on applicable HOBER inverter models

The ranges above are the way the two routes are read, not a specification of any product. The actual range of a pump follows the real product data of its series — ask us for the current figures for a given pump.

A pump that is already installed as an AC pump is not a BLDC project: converting an existing AC pump is a solar pumping inverter in front of that pump, which is the AC line.

04 / Pump types

BLDC Pump Types

Two pump types, one page: deep-well and surface. Each family below opens the published series, where its models and the water sources and applications it is classified under are set out.

Choose pump type

BLDC deep-well pumps

The pump goes down the borehole or the well and lifts the water to the surface. A screw pump is the shape some of these duties take.

05 / The controller

How the Controller Works

The controller is the drive of a BLDC system. The chain is the one this page opened with; what follows is what the controller does inside it.

  • MPPT The controller tracks the array so the pump is driven from the most power the array can give at that moment, rather than from a fixed voltage.
  • Protection The protections belong to the controller: dry run, over- and under-voltage, and the behaviour the pump shows when the array cannot drive it.
  • Input voltage The array is put together for the controller it feeds, so the input the controller accepts is what decides the string, not the other way round.
  • Output control The controller sets what the motor is driven at, so the pump follows the duty it was chosen for instead of running free.
  • Water level control A level switch at the tank or the borehole is wired to the controller, so the pump stops when the water is there and starts again when it is needed.
  • Applicable pump A controller is made for the pump it drives. That is why the pump and its controller are supplied as a set, and why the pair is what a duty point is read against.
  • Wiring The array reaches the controller, the controller reaches the pump, and the level switch reaches the controller. The terminals and the cable run are part of the installation check.

The figures that belong to a controller — the input it accepts and what it drives — are stated for the controller model in the record, not on this page. Ask us and we will confirm them for the pump you are looking at.
