Solar Booster & Pressure
System Solution

Move stored water or hold a pressure in a line, with a system matched to flow and pressure demand. HOBER matches the booster pump, the solar pumping inverter and the PV configuration for distributors, installers and project companies.

  • Pressure duty matching
  • PID / constant pressure, per model
  • PV sizing
  • Installation and technical support

The system

From the Tank to the Line

A booster works against a pressure rather than a lift, and the array carries that duty.

Controls sheltered under a solar array at a pumping station
Controls sheltered under the array.
  • Solar PV array Generates DC power from sunlight.
  • HOBER solar pumping inverter Controls pump operation and adapts to changing solar input. Control includes MPPT, soft start and soft stop, dry-run and level protection, system protection and optional remote monitoring where the model carries it.
  • Booster pump Lifts stored water into the line and holds it at pressure.
  • Pressure delivery The pipeline the pressure is held in, downstream of the pump.

The pump models, their figures and their curves are published with the range. The pump is matched into the system as a whole, together with the drive and the array.

Engineering challenge

Pressure Is the Duty

A booster set is read on the pressure it has to hold, not on the power of its motor.

Drawing: a booster pump on a pipeline with the inlet pressure, the flow, the target pressure and the pressure feedback markedA schematic. A storage tank stands at the left, an inlet pressure gauge sits on the suction line, and a booster pump lifts the water into a pipeline running right. A target pressure gauge stands on the pipeline downstream of the pump, and a dashed feedback line runs from that gauge back to the pump.Storage tankInlet pressureBooster pumpTarget pressurePID feedbackFlow
Where the figures a booster or pressure system is matched on are measured. Schematic, not to scale; the feedback is what holds the pressure.

A pressure duty is a control duty. The flow the line has to carry, the pressure it has to hold at the far end, the pressure the pump is fed at and the loss between them decide the duty point — and holding that pressure steady through a changing demand is what the drive and its pressure feedback are for. PID / constant pressure control is stated per model rather than across the range.

  1. Required flow The flow the line has to carry. Unit: m³/h
  2. Target pressure The pressure to hold at the far end of the line. Unit: bar
  3. Inlet pressure The pressure the pump is fed at. Unit: bar, from the tank or main it draws from
  4. Elevation difference The lift from the tank or main to the highest draw-off. Unit: m
  5. Pipeline length and diameter What the friction loss is read from. Units: m and mm
  6. Pump and motor data The pump already on site and its nameplate. From the nameplate: power, voltage, phase, rated current

Not sure about the head or the pressure?

The pipe friction loss calculator works out total dynamic head from the static head, the pipe friction loss and the fittings loss, and a pressure in bar converts to a head in metres.

Project data

Project Data We Need

The figures the pump, the drive and the array are matched on, and where each one is read.

The duty

  • Required flow m³/h
  • Target pressure bar at the far end of the line
  • Inlet pressure bar at the pump, from the tank or main
  • Operating hours h/day, and the hours of the day the pressure is wanted

The line

  • Pipeline length m
  • Pipe diameter mm or ″
  • Elevation difference m to the highest draw-off
  • Static head m from the lowest water level to the highest draw-off

The pump and the supply

  • Pump already on site an existing set to keep, or a new selection
  • Motor nameplate power, voltage, phase and rated current, or the nameplate photograph
  • Power source solar only, solar + grid, or solar + generator
  • Pressure feedback whether the line is read by a pressure sensor on site

System matching

From Project Data to System Matching

HOBER reads the flow, the pressure and the line against the range and matches the pump, the drive and the array to them.

  1. Project data
  2. HOBER matching
  3. The system

Example

Example project data

Flow
12 m³/h
Target pressure
4 bar
Inlet pressure
0.5 bar
Pipeline
180 m

The system the data resolves to

  • Booster / inline pump
  • Solar pumping inverter
  • PV configuration
  • System protection

The figures are an illustrative example of how a project is read, not a product claim: PID / constant pressure control is stated per model, so a line that has to hold a steady pressure is quoted on a model that carries it.

Support

System Matching Support Before Installation

The pump is only one part of a reliable booster system.

HOBER works on the system rather than the pump alone, from the project data to commissioning.
