Wells & boreholes

Deep-Well Solar Pumping
Solution

Lift groundwater from boreholes and deep wells with a system matched to flow, total head and well conditions. HOBER helps match the deep-well pump, the solar pumping inverter or controller and the PV configuration for distributors, installers and water supply projects.

  • Pump matching
  • PV sizing
  • Inverter / controller matching
  • Installation and technical support

The system

From Sunlight to Water

A deep-well solar pumping system converts solar energy into controlled pump operation and delivers groundwater where it is needed.

A solar pumping installation on site

  • Solar PV array Generates DC power from sunlight.
  • HOBER solar pumping inverter Controls pump operation and adapts to changing solar input. Control includes MPPT, soft start and soft stop, sleep and wake-up, dry-run and water-level protection and system protection, with optional remote monitoring where the model carries it.
  • Deep-well pump Lifts groundwater from inside the borehole, below the water level.
  • Water delivery Supplies water to storage tanks, irrigation systems or water networks.

The pump models, their figures and their curves are published with the range. The pump is matched into the system as a whole, together with the drive and the array.

Two Ways to Build a Deep-Well Solar Pumping System

The right architecture depends on project size, pump requirements and available power source.

Engineering challenge

Deep-Well Selection Starts with the Well

The hole the pump has to fit decides the pump, and the pump decides the drive and the array behind it.

Drawing: a borehole in cross-section with the five parameters measured on itA borehole in cross-section. A delivery point sits above ground at the top of the riser pipe, and the delivery height is measured from the ground level up to it. Inside the hole, the borehole diameter is dimensioned across the hole, the static water level is marked by a dashed water line, the pump installation depth is measured from the ground level down to the pump, and the total well depth is measured from the ground level down to the well bottom.Ground levelDelivery pointBorehole diameterStatic water levelPump installation depthTotal well depthDelivery height
Cross-section of a borehole with the well's own figures dimensioned on it: the diameter, the depth, the water level, the pump's setting and the height to the delivery point.

A deep-well system is not selected on pump power. The borehole the pump has to go down, the level the water stands at, the flow the project needs and the head the water has to be lifted through decide the pump — and what comes back up the same hole has to arrive at the delivery point. A pump chosen on power alone is a pump chosen without the project.

  1. Borehole diameter What is the borehole diameter? Examples: 4″ / 6″ / 8″ / 10″ / other
  2. Total well depth How deep is the borehole, from ground level? Unit: m
  3. Static water level Distance from ground level to the water surface before pumping. Unit: m
  4. Pump installation depth How deep is the pump set below the water level? Unit: m, measured on the riser
  5. Required flow How much water is required? Unit: m³/h
  6. Total head The lift from the water level to the delivery point, plus the pipe loss. Unit: m

Not sure about total head?

The pipe friction loss calculator works out total dynamic head from the static head, the pipe friction loss and the fittings loss.

Project data

Project Data We Need

The figures the pump, the drive and the array are matched on, and where each one is read.

The well

  • Borehole diameter 4″ / 6″ / 8″ / 10″ or other
  • Total well depth m
  • Static water level m below ground level
  • Pump installation depth m, if the setting is already fixed

The duty

  • Required flow m³/h
  • Required total head m, including the pipe loss
  • Delivery point tank, line or field, and the height to it
  • Daily water demand m³/day, and the hours of the day the water is wanted

The supply

  • Power source solar only, solar + grid, or solar + generator
  • Grid or generator supply voltage and frequency, where there is one
  • Pump already on site an existing pump to keep, or a new selection

System matching

From Project Data to System Matching

HOBER reads the well and the duty point against the range and matches the pump, the drive and the array to them.

Example

Example project data

Flow
30 m³/h
Total head
120 m
Borehole
6″
Power source
Solar + grid

The system the data resolves to

  • Deep-well pump
  • Solar pumping inverter / controller
  • PV configuration
  • System protection

The figures are an illustrative example of how a project is read, not a product claim: the pump follows the borehole and the duty point.

Product data

Need pump models, specifications or Q-H curves?

The models, the technical specifications and the performance curves are published series by series. The pump range is organised by the water source it serves, and each series states its own models, figures and Q-H curve.
